Built around 1791 as a log structure by William and Mary McCarty, the McCarty House is considered the oldest house in Muncy. William, along with his brother and cousins were Muncy’s founding fathers; they first laid out plots in 1797.

Originally the town was named “Pennsborough”, in honor of William Penn (the McCartys came from Quaker stock), but it was changed in 1827 to Muncy to pay credit to the tribe of Lenape people, the Monseys, who first lived in this area and supposedly because people thought the name “Pennsborough” was “too flat and long.”

In recent history (in my memory), it’s been a restaurant and a florist but now it’s empty as far as I’ve been able to find.
