A short distance from Boston, Lincoln, MA is known for its modernist homes, specifically the homes modernist designers built for themselves. The most notable house is that of Walter Gropius, the founder of the Bauhaus, which is open as a museum through Historic New England (and there’s an app for the house!) I decided to illustrate the Flansburgh house because I wanted to learn more about a (slightly) less well-known home.

Built in 1963 by Earl Flansburgh, a Boston architect, and his wife Polly, founder of Boston by Foot, for their family, it was designed to sit comfortably on it’s site—to fit in with the land and not disturb it overly much. Three things I especially love:

  • the bright yellow panels open to aid in air flow throughout the house and that they are bright yellow.

  • the red brick driveway blending into the pine needles

  • how at home it looks among the tall trees

Really good interior photos here.
